French bank backs out of financing Indonesian coal plant

In the spotlight, 10 January 2017

by Yvonne Kunz

For the first time at the Conference of the Parties (COP) in Bali 2007 and again with the ratification of the Paris Agreement, Indonesia has pledged to take serious emission reduction actions. As one of the biggest emitters worldwide, the pledge is to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 29 per cent by 2030, and up to 41 per cent with foreign support including technology and finance. The main contributors to toxic ... read more

Rohingya’s last hope

Rohingya’s last hope

In the spotlight, 27 November 2016

by Alex Flor

It’s good to know that the Indonesian people and their government care about the Rohingya in Burma (Myanmar). However, besides demanding for acknowledgement as citizens and improvement of their human rights situation in Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia should underline its commitment by her own means.

Hundreds, or even thousands of Rohingya refugees came by boat. Many of them were rejected by Indonesian authorizies while still at sea. Indonesian navy ... read more

How is Indonesian president Jokowi doing on environmental issues?

How is Indonesian president Jokowi doing on environmental issues?

In the spotlight, 16 June 2016

by Yvonne Kunz, Watch Indonesia!

Indeed, President Jokowi seems to have environmental issues on his agenda as the article cited below shows. The question remains how serious he takes his own agenda and how successful he will be in bringing this agenda forward. One of the main challenges of natural resource governance in Indonesia are the multiple land use status that one piece of land can be ascribed to. Multiple maps exist, declaring ... read more

Indonesia Receives First Batch of New German-made Main Battle Tanks

Indonesia Receives First Batch of New German-made Main Battle Tanks

In the spotlight, 24 May 2016

by Alex Flor

Since more than four years Watch Indonesia! and other organizations have protested against the export of German tanks to Indonesia, s. www.watchindonesia.org/14027/deutsche-panzerlieferungen-nach-indonesien?lang=de

In 2012 we raised the question why Main Battle Tanks (MBT) like the German Leopard must by modified for urban warfare, if these arms systems are only supposed to be used for „legitimate defence”? Defence against whom? Not at the border, but in urban areas?

The German government would never ... read more

Equal rights for all drug traffickers

Equal rights for all drug traffickers

In the spotlight, 30 October 2015

by Alex Flor

As a human rights defender I’m certainly not asking to put people on death row. But shouldn’t there be equal rights to all people? In January and April 2015 Indonesia executed 14 people for drug offenses – all except one of them were foreigners.

This week two Indonesian soldiers were arrested for the same offense. Will they also have to fear being killed by a death squad?

As Indonesian Military (TNI) spokesperson Maj. ... read more

Laksmi Pamuntjak: Censorship is returning to Indonesia in the name of the 1965 purges

Laksmi Pamuntjak: Censorship is returning to Indonesia in the name of the 1965 purges

In the spotlight, 28 October 2015

by Alex Flor

Laksmi Pamuntjak was one of the star writers at the 67th Frankfurt Book Fair that closed its doors just ten days ago. Indonesia was the “Guest of Honour” at the Fair, and due to the works of Laksmi Pamuntjak, Leila Chudori, Ayu Utami, and some others the mass killings against (alleged) communists in Indonesia from 1965 on became the top issue in coverage of the book fair by the German media.

Environmental activist murdered

Environmental activist murdered

In the spotlight, 28 May 2015

by Alex Flor

Last Saturday we lost a dear friend and colleague. Jopi Peranginangin was brutally killed in downtown Jakarta. He was stabbed to death with a knife or with a bayonette.

The alleged perpetrator is a member of Indonesia’s Navy. Was he just drunk, when he stabbed Jopi to death? Or was it a premediated murder, since Jopi was to release his research on corruption cases on palm oil concessions in June? Nobody ... read more
