Book Talk on Enduring Otherwise: Muslim Queer and Trans Worldmaking in Indonesia

Join us for a conversation with Ferdiansyah Thajib about his book Enduring Otherwise: Muslim Queer and Trans Worldmaking in Indonesia (NYU Press, 2026), moderated by Lisabona Rahman.

Drawing on ethnographic research in Aceh, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta, Enduring Otherwise explores how queer and trans Muslims in Indonesia navigate the intersections of sexuality, gender, and religion. Rather than portraying their lives solely through victimhood or resistance, the book offers a nuanced account of how people endure, build relationships, reinterpret faith, and create spaces of belonging amid social, political, and religious pressures.

The discussion invites participants to engage with the book's themes, ask questions, and reflect together on queer worldmaking, everyday practices of solidarity, and the complexities of living at the intersection of faith and gender diversity.

Ferdiansyah Thajib is a researcher and educator whose work focuses on queer politics, affect, and the intersections of memory, trauma, and collective healing in post-authoritarian Indonesia. He is Senior Lecturer at FAU Erlangen–Nürnberg and a member of the KUNCI Study Forum & Collective in Yogyakarta.
