Energy Transition in Sri Lanka & Indonesia: Between National Interests, Global Capital & Local Resistance
Renewable energy is often promoted as the path to a sustainable future. Yet in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, energy transitions are unfolding within unequal economic and political structures shaped by foreign investment and extractive development models. While Sri Lanka's debt crisis has accelerated investment in renewable energy projects and Indonesia continues to grapple with entrenched coal interests, communities across the region face land conflicts, environmental degradation, and exclusion from decision-making processes.
A special focus will be placed on West Papua, where large-scale development projects, including renewable energy initiatives and the extraction of transition minerals, highlight the tensions between economic growth, environmental protection, Indigenous rights, and local self-determination.
This webinar explores who gains, who loses, and what a truly just energy transition might require.
