The Promise depicts the events of the highly controversial 1969 referendum and the fight for West Papuan independence to this day through moving testimonies from exiled West Papuans and restored historical footage. The film highlights the role of Western countries and corporate interests in the ongoing occupation and genocide of the West Papuan people.

Speaker: Ottis Simopiaref is a land rights defender from West Papua, living in the Netherlands.
Moderator: Analie Gepulani Neiteler is a journalist, digital editor and an occasional writer and poet. She wrote her master’s thesis on Solidarity with Freedom in West Papua at HU's Institute for Asian & African Studies.
