Tourismus und Geothermie bedrohen die Lebensgrundlagen von Mensch und Tier auf den Inseln Komodo und Flores

Die Inseln Komodo, Padar und Flores sind international vor allem als Habitat des nur dort lebenden Komodowarans bekannt. Doch ihre einzigartigen Ökosysteme – ebenso wie die Lebensgrundlagen der lokalen Bevölkerung – sind durch massive Großprojekte bedroht: Der Komodo-Nationalpark, UNESCO-Biosphärenreservat, soll in einen exklusiven „Jurassic Park“ umgebaut werden. Komodo und die Hafenstadt Labuan Bajo zählen zu den zehn Regionen, die im Rahmen sogenannter Strategischer Nationaler Projekte (PSN) zu „neuen Balis“ ausgebaut werden sollen – samt Hotelanlagen und Tourismusinfrastruktur. Gleichzeitig finanziert die deutsche KfW Bank (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) auf Flores in Poco Leok ein Geothermieprojekt, das Waldflächen und indigene Gemeinschaften gefährdet.

In dem Gespräch werden zwei Aktivisten aus Flores, Doni Parera und Venansius Haryanto, über gemeinschaftsbasierte Ansätze zum Schutz von Umwelt und Menschenrechten berichten, sowie über den Widerstand gegen zerstörerische Großprojekte und staatliche Repression. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, den Grundstein für ein solidarisches Netzwerk in Deutschland zu legen, das sich für die Belange der lokalen Bevölkerung einsetzt.

Tourism and Geothermal Energy Threaten the Livelihoods of People and Animals on the Islands of Komodo and Flores
The islands of Komodo, Padar, and Flores are internationally known primarily as the exclusive habitat of the Komodo dragon. However, their unique ecosystems — as well as the livelihoods of local communities — are under threat from large-scale development projects: Komodo National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is to be transformed into an exclusive “Jurassic Park.” Komodo and the port city of Labuan Bajo are among ten regions designated as “Strategic National Projects” (Proyek Strategis Nasional, PSN), to be developed into “new Balis” — including hotel complexes and tourism infrastructure. At the same time, the German development bank KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) is funding a geothermal project in Poco Leok on Flores, which poses a threat to forest areas and Indigenous communities.
In this discussion, two activists from Flores — Doni Parera and Venansius Haryanto — will speak about community-based approaches to protecting the environment and human rights, as well as resistance to destructive megaprojects and state repression. The event aims to lay the foundation for a solidarity network in Germany that advocates for the rights and interests of local communities.
