As a human rights defender I’m certainly not asking to put people on death row. But shouldn’t there be equal rights to all people? In January and April 2015 Indonesia executed 14 people for drug offenses – all except one of them were foreigners.

Laksmi Pamuntjak was one of the star writers at the 67th Frankfurt Book Fair that closed its doors just ten days ago. Indonesia was the “Guest of Honour” at the Fair, and due to the works of Laksmi Pamuntjak, Leila Chudori, Ayu Utami, and some others the mass killings against (alleged) communists in Indonesia from 1965 on became the top issue in coverage of the book fair by the German media.

Indonesia’s freedom of expression and critical thinking are under attack. Series of repressive and violent acts by the authorities against attempts to critically revisit and review the 1965 communist purge for the betterment of the nation and its people are a strong proof that the totalitarian legacy from the New Order Regime is still alive and kicking.

Prior to the Independence Day celebrations last month, the international European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) conference was held in Vienna, Austria, from of Aug. 11 to 14. The conference brought together 500 scholars and PhD students, including 130 participants from Asia, with 26 Indonesians participating also.
