Talk & Discussion with Lian Gogali: Women as Peacemakers – Strengthening Indonesia’s Democracy

Dienstag, 9 Mai 2023, 18:30 Uhr, Institut für Asien & Afrikawissenschaften, Invalidenstr. 118, 10115 Berlin, Raum 117

Lian Gogali founded Institut Mosintuwu in 2008 after violent sectarian conflicts in Poso since 1998 had claimed hundreds of lives and created a climate of distrust among the different religious groups. Gogali, a Poso native, began her interreligious initiatives by organizing women of different faiths to learn how to live trustingly and harmoniously with one another through storytelling. Later, the congregation of women evolved into a school for lifelong learning with human rights at the forefront. The institute has since grown into a community of hundreds of women across 80 villages, many of whom hold leadership positions in their respective villages. Institut Mosintuwu’s work is not limited to peacebuilding; Poso has also seen environmental destruction, and large-scale projects like mining, palm oil cultivation, and dam projects.

Join us for an insightful evening with Lian Gogali as she shares her journey and experiences in establishing Institut Mosintuwu, and discusses the institute’s transformative work in Poso beyond peacebuilding, including addressing natural resources conflicts and environmental issues.

The event is jointly organized by Watch Indonesia! e.V and the Freigeist Research Group „Secularity, Islam, and Democracy in Indonesia and Turkey“ at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
