The situation in Dili continues to be defined by the on-going violence, which tends to fluctuate in terms of its intensity and the stated reasons for it seem to change with time. In the night of 30 September 1965, a group of young military officers calling itself the “30th September Movement”, kidnapped and murdered six high-ranking Generals and one Lieutenant, allegedly to prevent a coup against Indonesia’s first president Soekarno.
