Palm Oil and Biofuels Policy Reform

Palm Oil and Biofuels Policy Reform

February 2015

Open Letter to the European Parliament

Dear Members of the European Parliament,

We, the undersigned organisations, as representatives of civil society from across Asia, Africa and Latin America, are seriously concerned about the devastating impact that Europe’s demand for biofuels is having on our forests and millions of our people, and about its significant contribution to rising greenhouse gas emissions.
Soon, you will vote on vital reforms to EU biofuels policy. Unless you take action to ... read more

http://www.dandc.eu/en/article/why-human-rights-depend-civil-society-activism-and-what-role-churches-can-play

by Hans Dembowski

Today, other issues arise for those who want to protect human rights than did 20 years ago. The challenges are still daunting however. Churches can play an important role in improving matters.

Indonesia ceased to be a dictatorship more than a decade ago. Nonetheless, there are still human-rights problems, says Basilisa Dengen of Watch Indonesia!, a non-governmental organisation based in Berlin. She adds that today’s human-rights infringements ... read more

Europe’s agrofuels vote fails on food sovereignty, rights and climate

Europe’s agrofuels vote fails on food sovereignty, rights and climate

13 September 2013

Joint statement by DTE, 11.11.11, Misereror, Watch Indonesia! and WALHI

A crucial vote on agrofuels in the European Parliament on September 11th has failed to fix a flawed policy which is driving deforestation, landgrabbing, human rights abuses and undermining communities’ food sovereignty in producer countries like Indonesia.

Members of the European Parliament set a 6% cap on the use of agrofuels (land-based biofuels) to meet Europe’s demand for fuel – currently, Europe’s agrofuel consumption is 4.7%. This ... read more

Addressing the impacts of the EU’s agrofuels policies on Indonesia

Addressing the impacts of the EU’s agrofuels policies on Indonesia

September 4th, 2013

Rocketing carbon emissions; forests burned or bulldozed and wildlife habitats destroyed; the livelihoods of forest-dependent peoples devastated, their ancestral lands taken without consent. In Indonesia, the devastating costs of the EU’s agrofuel revolution are clear and it is time Europe took responsibility.

In September 2013, international campaigners Nur Hidayati of Walhi (Friends of the Earth Indonesia) and Bondan Andriyanu of Sawit Watch (“Oil Palm Watch”) join EU NGOs to present this message to EU decision-makers. They show what life ... read more
