Other than initially reported, the exchange of gunfire on the premises used by the UN for aid distribution was most probably not a clash between members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Armed Forces. According to an eyewitness account, an Indonesian soldier snapped and opened fire for reasons so far unknown. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Today, December 29th, 2004, the Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla has revoked the status of civil emergency for Aceh. According to information of the Indonesian online news service Kompas Cyber Media (KCM), the Central Government also took over the government authority in the troubled province.

The earth quake that struck on Sunday was the biggest of its kind during the last 40 years. Its epicentre was located 150 km off the South-western coastline of the Indonesian province of Aceh. The tidal wave which was triggered by the quake took the life of tens of thousands in the coastal regions of twelve Asian and African states.
